Jump to RecipeThis apple crisp recipe made with pure maple syrup and the instructions below, make this super simple and easy to prepare in no time!
Apple crisp with pure maple syrup is my go-to when I have apples sitting around needing to be used up! It is super healthy and you can feel good that you are feeding your body wholesome, nutritious and life-giving foods.
I think apple crips is THE best dessert there possibly is! Ok, well it’s a least close to the top with cheesecake, chocolate cake and all those goodies. But apple crisp served warm with vanilla ice cream is NOT resistible in my opinion. Mmmmmmmmmmm. I’m also a staunch believer that apple crisp needs to have a thick syrupy filling. Using maple syrup, thickener and water, this recipe will provide that. Using maple syrup in your apple crips gives a very delightful taste.
I always like cooking in large batches, so a nice large size pan of this will go a long way for us! You can make this apple crisp and serve it several times around. Does anyone get tired of a yummy apple crisp? No. I didn’t think so.
Using up apples that are on the verge of shriveling and needing to have something done with them, are great for an apple crisp.
For a thickener, I like to use tapioca granules, although corn starch, or perma-flo probably will work just as well!
A little bit of cinnamon, some maple syrup (use pure when at all possible) and water wrap up the ingredient list for the filling. As you can see, it is super simple and easy.
Tip: To avoid feeling rushed, make sure you plan to have enough time to prepare the apples.
When to serve apple crisp
Apple crisp is perfect for leftovers. In our home, it serves a variety of purposes besides dessert. Have it for your dessert with ice cream and in the morning serve it for breakfast alongside a cup of homemade hazelnut latte. I also consider crisps to be a warm, homey and comforting dessert to bring to a sick friend, elderly neighbor, new mom, etc. Serving it when you have company over is also great!
How to serve apple crisp
Apple crisp can be served with a variety of different things. Some of our favorites include:
- vanilla ice cream
- frozen whipped topping/cool whip
- homemade fresh whip cream
- yogurt
- milk
And I’m sure you can think of some more.
What kind of oats to use?
Apple crisp can be made with rolled oats or quick oats. I will include the different variations for this recipe. I personally prefer using mostly quick oats and maybe a little bit of rolled oats. You could also use all rolled oats and simply pulse a few times in the food processor or blender to break it up a little. Then mix with the rest of the topping ingredients.
What kind of apples to use?
For the filling part, you can use a wide variety of different apples. Some of my favorites are Cortland, Honeycrisp, Jonathan‘s, or any type of hearty winter keeper. Red Delicious are not particularly recommended since they tend to mush easier and the overall taste of the cooked apples is a tad more bland, but they could be used just the same.

How to prepare apple crisp
I’m going to give you the instructions that provide for easy and simple clean up and that eliminate excess dish washing.
I don’t personally measure out the amount of apples I’m using, so I just slice them straight into the pan. Sprinkle on the cinnamon, tapioca granules or thickener of choice, maple syrup and water.
Mix it up a little to incorporate all the ingredients. Set aside.
For the topping: Measure out your coconut oil or butter. I like to use a large glass bowl/measuring cup. Then melt in oven (on very low heat), microwave, etc.
Add maple syrup and oats.
Add flour if using and mix.
Spread topping mixture evenly over apples. Feel free to press the mixture and flatten it across the apples. I like to leave it a little bumpy:) Gives it a good “crumble” resemblance.
Bake the crisp uncovered at 350 for about 40-50 minutes. It will depend on the size pan you use. You can check for the apples to be tender and the topping to be browned. Then you will know it is probably done. Serve warm with a dollop of ice cream and enjoy!

- 1/2 t cinnamon
- 2 T Tapioca granules or cornstarch
- 1/2 cup water (may need more added during baking time)
- 1 3/4 cup oats (can use 1/2 cup flour-it helps to give a crunchier topping)
- 1/4-1/3 cup pure maple syrup

Instructions
- This recipe makes a 8×8 pan although it can be doubled for a 9×13.Preheat oven to 350. Slice and peel apples into baking dish. Add maple syrup, cinnamon, tapioca granules and water. Stir together. Set aside.Melt oil in large glass dish.Add oats and maple syrup. Mix till incorporated and sprinkle evenly on apple mixture. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until apples reach desired tenderness. Baking time will depend on the apple variety used. Also, check half way through to see if more water is needed. (It moistens the apples to allow them to cook and water can escape into the oven). Remove from oven when done and allow to cool slightly before enjoying!

Where does the water go? Thanks

The small amount of water is added to help the apples cook down. Sprinkle it over the apples in the pan with the other ingredients directed.
