Yes you can! Absolutely! You can make some delicious hot drinks in your own kitchen with a few tweaks and additions to your regular hot chocolate drink mix. All with the great addition of some GOOD coffee creamer!
Adding coffee creamer to your cup of hot cocoa adds extra flavor to the classic favorite! There are many different creamers and flavors to chose from. Something for everyone’s personal preference!
During the winter season on a cold day, two of my most favorite go-to drinks are hot tea and hot chocolate. For tea I usually prefer peppermint and chamomile with a little honey, and hot chocolate is the best with some peppermint added, whether that is with peppermint coffee creamer or a candy cane stick.
Curling up with a good book and a cup of creamy hot cocoa is one of my favorite ways to spend a winter evening.
Hot chocolate bar trays are becoming a fun and popular thing to do- if you are planning one sometime soon, then consider adding coffee creamer to your set-up.
So gather the family around, get out the hot cocoa supplies, your favorite snacks and enjoy some fun family time together while sipping on a delicious classic with a unique twist!
What is the difference between hot cocoa and hot chocolate?
So is there really a difference between hot chocolate and hot cocoa? Or is it the same thing?
I had to look this up because I wasn’t sure myself. The answer made perfect sense and I will share it with you:
Hot chocolate is made with a base of melted chocolate and added sweetener, milk, and so on.
Hot cocoa, on the other hand, is made with powdered cocoa (cocoa powder), and milk, sweetener and so on.
That is the technical difference. In this post we are using both names interchangeably, with either or both meanings, depending on the context. So most of the time when I refer to hot chocolate, I also mean hot cocoa:)
Hint: (Google likes if I use both names/terms in this post.)

What are the best coffee creamers to use in hot chocolate?
Any type of flavored creamer works but I like to recommend natural coffee creamers to be used. Try to avoid all the extra unnecessary ingredients and chemicals that are in a lot of store brand coffee creamers.
There are even non-dairy creamer options available in most grocery stores now-a-days.
No matter what brand or type you choose to use, there are many different flavors that you can choose from. Try a variety of flavors to see which one you like best. Not all flavor combinations might be your favorite when mixed with hot cocoa!
You can use your own hazelnut coffee creamer– see recipe here.
Some other brands with all simple ingredients that I like to use from the store are:
- Chobani
- Organic Valley
Some favorite flavors of coffee creamer you can use:
There are many flavors of coffee creamers that pair well with hot cocoa, and some that might clash, depending on your personal preference. For a rich chocolate flavor try a Mocha flavor. If you love the classics then use French Vanilla. No matter what flavor of creamer you decide to use, don’t be hesitant to keep on trying new flavors in the future!
These are some of the most commonly used coffee creamer flavors:
- Sweet cream
- French vanilla
- Pumpkin spice
- Hazelnut
- Peppermint mocha
There are sugar-free options available if you are needing to avoid white sugar for health reasons as well as non-dairy coffee creamer for those avoiding dairy.
Always read labels for clarification.
You can also make a quick and simple single serve coffee creamer substitute with the easy recipe below:
- 2 T whole milk (or part skim milk and part heavy whipping cream) – you can also use all whipping cream in place of milk for a creamier and richer drink.
- 1 T unrefined sugar or maple syrup
- scant 1/4 tsp flavoring or extract of choice (vanilla extract is an excellent choice)
- tiniest pinch of salt
Add these ingredients right into your mug of hot chocolate and stir well!
Note: other common flavorings or extracts to use are hazelnut or caramel.
How much coffee creamer should you use in hot chocolate?
This will depend on taste buds and personal preferences as well as the specific type of coffee creamer being used. Some might prefer just a splash of coffee creamer in their cup of hot cocoa and others would vote for a lot more!
Generally speaking though, I recommend using a little less then you would for coffee.
Keep in mind, coffee is not naturally sweet like hot chocolate is, so adding coffee creamer, which contains sweetener, is going to make for a really sweet drink! And if your hot chocolate is too too sweet, it actually won’t really taste that great.
Add-in’s to hot chocolate :
- Chocolate chips
- Mini marshmallows
- Candy canes
- Cool whip (whip cream)
Hot cocoa bar ideas:
- hot cocoa bombs
- cool whip
- cookies
- chocolate covered pretzels
- favorite treats
- candy canes
- marshmallows
- flavored syrups
- milk
- ice cream
- coffee creamers (french vanilla creamer is a popular favorite)
Make you own hot cocoa mix:
Most hot cocoa mixes are fairly similar with the same base ingredients.
For example:
Unsweetened cocoa powder
Sugar or sweetener of choice (I like to use unrefined sugar)
Hot water
Milk of choice
